I just wanted to bring attention to the plight of the vaquitas once again. As of right now, there’re only 12 left in the Gulf of California. Gill nets are the greatest threat to these animals and residents of the gulf are reluctant to stop using these nets.

Happy world whale day everyone! Pictured here is a Norway Bowhead Whale and they are truly spectacular cetaceans. Once pushed to the brink of extinction, these guys made a remarkable comeback and are some the most beautiful inhabitants of the arctic. And if it weren't for Bowheads, Humpbacks, Blue whales and many other cetaceans, there would be an empty feeling wrenched deep inside of me regarding my passion. Whales have influenced me to have a never ending curiosity and to hold a more broadened perception of what meets my eyes day to day. -@chandlerrincon

Today, February 16th, is World Whale Day!
-
Every year, during the Winter months, North Pacific Humpback whales migrate 6000 miles from the Fridget icy waters in Alaska to their breeding grounds in Hawaii. The migration is the longest in the animal kingdom. February is the prime month to spot whales off the Hawaiian islands. It's important to remember that every single day of the year we should celebrate and respect the creatures for who they are, as well as other inhabitants of the ocean. 🐋

It’s #worldwhaleday !!
I wish you guys liked photos of whales as much as photos of butts, BUT too bad , I’m going to keep on posting them because they are what make my heart sing 💙🎶🐋
Side note, @xploreoffshore endless thanks to you for jump starting my hands on obsession and giving me more once in a lifetime experiences on the water than I could have ever anticipated 🙌
(Yes orcas are the largest dolphin species and not ‘whales’, but I think the word whale is pretty flexible 😘)

This #WorldWhaleDay we couldn't resist sharing some incredible images of our blue whale skeleton.
This particular whale, now named Hope, stranded near the harbour town of Wexford in 1891. Check out the Oceans hub on website for more of her fascianting story, including how new science helping us tell the story of the last few years of her life.

Happy World Whale Day cetacean lovers!!! 😃💙🐳 Oh how I love that there is a day for the whales, my muses, my gurus, my inspiration! They never cease to bring joy and wonder into my life and I still marvel at their existence. 💙🐳🌊🐋There are many whales that are on the threatened or endangered list - the northern right whale, the blue whale, the tiny vaquita, the fin whale and sei whale...the list goes on. Whaling needs to stop, we need to take action on climate change, plastic pollution needs to be curbed and respect for our planet needs to be foremost on our agendas. We are all connected to this precious orb and each other. If you wanna do something for the whales today perhaps implement a new plastic free strategy, find a petition online that targets whaling, make a pledge to reduce your meat/seafood consumption or google small ways to help save our oceans! 💙 I haven’t decided what I will do yet? Hrrrmmm??? How will you mark this special day? 🤔 Again, Happy World Whale Day!!!!! 😃💙🐳🌊🐋✨🌏

Since it’s world whale day I decided to post something about the southern residents. As a majority may know about the plight of the southern residents, some people may not know how to help, or, what they are facing.
Although no one can say for sure what is causing the decrease in the SRKW’s, researchers agree that the following issues are likely factors:
-
Vessel traffic and noise: J, L and K pods are exposed to some of the highest levels of vessel traffic and noise of any whales in the world.
-
Pollution: Researchers have determined that the Southern Residents are among the most contaminated animals on Earth.
-
Food Decline/availability of prey: Sixteen salmon stocks have been listed as threatened or endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Salmon are the primary source of food for the southern resident Community. -
Low Population Size: Researchers say that when populations reach critically low levels, they may never rebound. The population has reached drastically low levels to the point were only 75 killer whales are left within the population, and inbreeding has started to occur.
-
The challenges the SRKW’s are vastly complicated and sometimes have a political involvement. Here are some things that you could to do help the SRKW’s:
Consume little to no salmon as possible, this includes both wild-caught and farmed salmon. When there is less of a demand for salmon, less will be caught and the whales will have more to rely on for nourishment.
-
Try to cut out or if not reduce the amount of harmful products and use more natural ones. A majority of household cleaners people tend to use on a day to day basis contain toxic chemicals that can get into groundwater and find their way into the ocean.

Today is the #worldwhaleday : Cetacea is an order/infraorder (depends on the classification) of carnivorous finned acquatic mammals of the Theria subclass.
It contains 2 exant suborder/parvorder: Mysticeti (12 families) and Odontoceti (3 superfamilies). This clade contains about 89 species (85 live in marine waters, 4 species of dolphins in rivers).
Today is also the #worldpangolinday : pangolins are mammals of the Manidae family; they're characterised by keratine scales covering their skin. There are 3 genus and 8 species, and all of them are threatened ( 4 vulnerable, 2 endangered and 2 critically endangered); the main reasons of their disappearance are the loss of habitat and the poaching for the meat an the scales utilised in the traditional Chinese medicine; for this reason the world pangolin day has been established.
In the photo 2 of the 8 species of pangolin from the Natural History Museum of Milan: on the top a Manis crassicaudata and on the bottom a Smutsia temminckii.

Today is World Whale Day! For thousands of years these magnificent animals have influenced human culture and evoked wonder in our hearts. We nearly lost many of these iconic species to the whaling era - for this blue whale, only around 2% of it's original population exists today. Healthy whales are part of a healthy ocean - so protecting them should be our highest priority if we want to ensure their future (as well as our own).

This World Whale Day, let's think about all the ways our way of life is threatening these majestic animals.  Some may be obvious, such as whale hunting for human consumption.  Others, such as commercial fishing, which affects whales in many ways (from bycatch, to increasing plastic pollution from fishing gear, to collisions) are less obvious. They are also affected by climate change and by noise and oil pollution from ships.
Before you eat, before you buy, think about how your habits are impacting (directly or indirectly) the animals you love.

Hello everyone! Today we’re celebrating World Whale Day, a day that aims to raise awareness for these gentle giants. Whales have always had a special place in my heart, and I have no doubt that my passion for them will continue grow with each passing day. They are majestic, intelligent, and beautiful creatures that deserve all the respect and admiration the world has to offer.

There seems to be no better day than today to announce my first project: Starting tomorrow, I’ll be featuring a different species of cetacean once every three days. I’ll be working through the alphabet, and for each letter I’ll be featuring a different cetacean whose species begins with that letter.

If you have an requests for whales, dolphins, or porpoises that you’d like me to feature, please message me! I’d love to hear your suggestions!

Happy #WorldWhaleDay everyone 🐋💙! It is such a privilege to live in a place that has whales on the doorstep! I filmed this humpback whale last summer & on that day we saw about 30 of them in an hour, which was just WILD! Whales have been a huge inspiration in my conservation work & one of the biggest reasons I love the oceans.
.
Anyone had the chance to see whales?! If you haven't seen one and you're in BC let's go find some! One of the great things about Vancouver Island is that you don't need access to a boat to spot whales, some of my best sightings have been from land!
.
The markings under the humpack's tail are unique, like our fingerprints, we use them to identify the whales. So if you ever snap a picture of a whale tail, there's a whole database you can look up & see who you saw! (Just to add this was taken with a zoom lens, DO NOT GET TOO CLOSE TO WHALES).
