These are the flowers of three native Hawaiian plants I observed along the coast near Anaʻehoʻomalu Bay on Big Island. 1- ʻōhelo kai (Lycium sandwicense), 2- ʻaeʻae (Bacopa monnieri), 3- ʻākulikuli (Sesuvium portulacastrum). All have perfect (male & female parts) flowers, but the # of stamen and stigma presentation vary from flower to flower. Fun Friday with IDEA! Here is a new creation by our Biology club. A living Colorado native moss wall in the shape of our IDEA logo! The intention of this project is to bridge the life sciences with fields of engineering and incorporating design elements, functionality, and be esthetically pleasing. A Hydroponics system was created utilizing a fish tank operating on minimal amounts of water and fish wastes needed to hydrate the plants. SLO: Z učenci OŠ Žirovnica smo na Pokljuki spoznavali živalski svet Triglavskega narodnega parka. Na sprehodu smo iskali sledi živali v snegu in videli, da nismo edini obiskovalci gozdnih poti.🐾🦊❄️ ENG: With the children of elementary school Žirovnica we were learning about the wild animals of Triglav National Park. On the walk in Pokljuka plateau we searched for animal traces in the snow and found out that we are not the only visitors of forest paths. #throwbackthursday: Dr. George E. Lindsay was director of The Nat from 1956 to 1963. Donning glasses and a pith helmet, he’s featured here with former Curator of Botany Reid Moran standing next to a huge cactus in Baja California. Dr. Lindsay developed his fascination with cacti as a child and spent the rest of his life studying, collecting, and describing cactus species. He took his first trip into Baja California at 16, and made many more collecting trips throughout his lifetime. Lindsay combined his research with work as an administrator at three museums—the San Diego Natural History Museum, the California Academy of Sciences, and the Desert Botanical Garden. we have many books in our library donated by Lindsay with his distinctive red and white bookplate inside the cover. Wasp nests. Malaysia. The first one was built on a concrete ceiling. About 4cm. I think this paper wasp nest is the most beautiful piece of insect construction that I’ve come across — just look at that front door!⠀ ⠀ The second shot is a completely different species (also in Malaysia) built along the top of a termite tunnel (about 15cm string of cells). Look closely and you can see that one wasp has her rear end in one of the cells as if laying an egg. You can also see eggs in some of the other cells and that the wasps have capped at least one cell. No idea if they are feeding on termites but I would not be surprised.⠀ ⠀ Next up are three oddly shaped cells that wasps had built under a leaf — I suspect they are not completed but, if you look closely, you can see their tiny eggs in two of the cells. Unfortunately, the wasps would not pose but they also made no effort to defend their nest. ⠀ ⠀ Finally, an absolutely beautiful little potter wasp. These are made from

Happily, ice has stopped falling from the sky here & temps are warming up for a couple days before the next round of winter weather comes our way.⠀ ㅤㅤ⠀ This handsome little Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) posed for me during one of our previous winter storms. They’re year-round residents here & are bold little birds. ⠀ ㅤㅤ⠀ Birds end up getting most of my photographic attention during our winter months while waiting for all the other macro-friendly creatures to show up again. ⠀ ㅤㅤ⠀ Actually, come to think of it, there are creatures still out there for macro shots, but I’m a cold-weather wimp, so they have to wait for me to show up again.⠀ ㅤㅤ⠀ Love this bird's soft gray plumage with that splash of peachy color on the sides of its belly.
