Where in the world is TK421!? It has been a month since the CRC and our partners Belize Forest Department and Toledo Institute for Development and Environment (TIDE) deployed the first satellite transmitter on an American croc in Belize, TK421. In the past month we are happy to report that the croc has stayed within the general area of relocation but has made multiple transitions between wetland and coastal habitats. We are still working on the calculations but TK is consistently traveling a distance of about 7km. If you are interested in sponsoring satellite usage ($40BZ or $20US/month), or another transmitter please contact the CRC!

American crocodiles can be found in the southernmost tip of the Everglades, the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles naturally coexist. Many people often confuse alligators and crocodiles, but the easiet way to tell them apart is their teeth. Crocodiles have some bottom teeth that protrude outside their top teeth, while alligators have bottom teeth completely concealed by their top teeth. Of course, there are other ways to tell alligators and crocodiles apart, such as size, color, temperament, geographic distribution, etc.

Its permanence on earth is thanks to its heart, the most efficient and advanced in animal kingdom ever known. Its myocardium has 4 cavities instead of 3, that is, it does not mix oxygenated and non-oxygenated blood; It also has a specialized structure unique to crocodiles, the "Foramen of Panizza". All this allows to crocodiles to submerge for more than an hour as it is capable of pumping oxygen only to the places where it is needed, brain and the tail, without wasting in the places where it does not require it and thus improve the use of energy. In another publication I will continue with the important relationship of Panizza's Foramen and its amazing adaptation. In photography. Not widely known, ancient civilizations living among crocodiles in the Americas revered these creatures for their place in creation (with reverance, came knowledge to coexist with crocodiles). Cipactli was a crocodile god (with some fish features) of the Aztec world. Cipactli (which means "old crocodile" in Nahuatl), was created by the 4 principal gods and is seen as the creator of the cosmos, in which Earth laid or was created by the back of Cipactli.

Check out the teeth on this little American crocodile in the first pic. It’s common to see bottom row teeth protruding through the upper jaw in crocs, but I had never seen it on one this small. Pretty interesting to see! It can look very impressive on the big adult crocs, and I’ve seen it in a few gators as well, although much more rarely. This is a natural process, no it does not hurt them as far as we can tell.
Had a great time last night out conducting crocodile research in the upper keys with @thermoregulator_ for the @thecrocdocs swipe through to see a few more shots. We caught six young crocs and weighed, measured, tagged and released them back into the wild. This information is vital for monitoring the overall health of the population, and can help be an indicator of the total ecosystem. We did see a few adults we tried to gather data on as well but they were too wary and eluded us.
Florida is the only place in the world where alligators and crocodiles are both native and coexist! The croc population is much smaller though, with only an estimated 2k or so in the wild in Florida. They are listed as threatened under the endangered species act and protected. They are a shy and unaggressive species with no human fatalities attributed in Florida.

A head-start program is a conservation strategy used to recover a species population. This conservation technique involves raising young animals in captivity and then releasing them into the wild once they’ve reached a certain size/weight📏
•
•
This ensures that a greater percentage of animals survive in the wild as hatchlings are very vulnerable to threats such as predation •
•
These hatchlings are part of a head-start program. They will be released into the wild once they reach a size of ~ 4ft.

The eyes of the crocodiles are impressive and beautiful. They are provided with three eyelids. The third that can be considered as "internal", is under the upper and lower eyelids, works as a protective layer used when crocodiles are underwater. As you can see, has a vertical pupil similar to cats, to facilitate night vision. Have you ever seen the glow of some animals at night? This occurs thanks to "Tapetum lucidum" that reflects the light, making the function of "lamps", crocodiles possess it too. Their vision underwater is much better than we can believe and they have a great adaptability for both, freshwater and saltwater species. On my hand, a young american crocodile Crocodylus acutus on @esteroelsalado. If you liked, share it and press "like" button. Thank you.

Our little friend cruising the calm waters of the cenote during my last freediving class. Never gets old!
Do you know that most crocodiles stay underwater from 10mn to 30mn for casual / hunting dives?
But on special circumstances they can hold their breath for up to 2 hours. It has also been shown that during such prolonged dives, oxygen consumption immediately after diving actually falls as the dive continues. In essence, the animal adjusts its oxygen consumption to enable it to dive for longer. Although the lungs can be used as a reserve air supply, in most cases when the crocodile dives quickly it expels the majority of air from its lungs. The crocodilian heart comes into play here, with valves closing to redirect blood to essential areas, and restrict its flow into non-essential areas - thus contributing to the reduced oxygen consumption that is seen. Crocodilian blood is also remarkable in its affinity for oxygen, carrying more in oxygen rich areas, and releasing it more quickly in oxygen deprived areas.
