Spring seems to be knocking on the door and inviting people out to enjoy the weather. Prague zoo is a great place to visit on a sunny day. We visited this weekend and saw these beautiful endangered gharials. Prague zoo has the largest population of them in Europe.

Do you know this strange creature relishing in one of Corbett‘s turqouise streams? It‘s a gharial, an ancient species of south Asian crocodile that can reach 6 m in length but only preys on fish. Thus nothing to worry about 😂. #indianwildlife #gharial #corbettnationalpark #corbett #terai #himalayanwildlife #tigersafari

The gharial is one of the longest of all living crocodilians, with a body length of 350–450 cm (140–180 in).The gharial (Gavialis gangeticus), also known as the gavial, and fish-eating crocodile is a crocodilian in the family Gavialidae, and is native to the northern part of the Indian subcontinent. The global wild gharial population is estimated at fewer than 235 individuals, which are threatened by loss of riverine habitat, depletion of fish resources, and entanglement in fishing nets.

Gharials last stand
I'd never seen this slender snouted croc before. One of few places on earth they remain is in Katarniaghat wildlife reserve in Northern India. Critically endangered by the IUCN the gharial may number around 250. The hatchlings are taken into captivity to nurture them before being returned to the wild.
These fish eating crocs diverged some 40million years ago from the main crocodile family we see today. We can't afford to lose them. But they have declined 98% since 1940s.

Today's photo features a gharial! This little guy was resting in the sand at @zootampa enjoying the sun. Seeing his majestic features makes me understand why people use to believe in dragons! .

Looking for baby gharials (under 5 feet). Spotting the big ones is easy but the young ones were hard to spot especially as we were against the sun! Despite the odds and the rampant illegal sand mining (this time downstream as upstream sand has been wiped out clean by these guys) on the Madhya Pradesh side of the Chambal, we spotted 14 juveniles warming themselves on the river banks. Many are relentlessly trying to conserve the Chambal and it's bio-diversity but I believe we will be at square one until sand mining is not restricted immediately. Would love to hear your suggestions to curb this harmful activity on our precious Chambal River! Send me a DM or comment below. Thank you

Had such a blast yesterday hanging out at Fort Worth Zoo with @zoodreams @stevenviridis and @sancabulan. The Museum of Living Art is truly an incredible display of Reptile and Amphibian diversity and by far one of my favorite reptile collections I have seen. Seeing the Indian Gharials (Gavialis gangeticus), Decary’s Pygmy Chameleons (Brookesia decaryi) and the various Arboreal Alligator Lizards (Abronia spp.) was truly a treat as these three animals are extremely rare in US Zoos. It is also always a great time when you get to connect with new and old zoo friends even if you are debating who’s crocodile is bigger! ———————————————————————————#fortworthzoo #museumoflivingart #reptiles #zoo #texas #fortworth #reptilehouse #crocodile #gharial #chameleon #brookesia #brookesiadecaryi #conservationefforts #abronia #abroniagraminea #gavialisgangeticus #crocodylusporosus #saltwatercrocodile #exhibits #reptile #zoofriends #zoolife #zookeeper #herpetology #zoocollection #networking #diversity #rarespecies #endangeredspecies #conservation

One of the distinguishing characteristics of the Gharial is that it has a long and thin snout. They have very tiny teeth with more than 100 of them in that limited amount of space. They can become very large animals with males about 20 ft, but the average size is 15 ft. The average life span for these animals is from 40 to 60 years.

They feature scaly skin that is often used to make leather goods. They also have very large eyes which seem out of place for the rest of their face. They skin is a light gray to dark gray color. They often have patterns on them that help to offer plenty of camouflage.
