Today a rare Galapagos tortoise was seen on Santa Cruz. I couldn't help but think of all the tortoise friends we made this past summer. Everyone meet Harold. 🐢 #galapagos #elchato #tortoise #santacruz #santacruzisland #gianttortoise #backpackinginecuador #familyvacation2018
Not seen for 100 years, this rare Galápagos tortoise was considered all but extinct – until now. The adult female Fernandina Giant Tortoise, possibly older than 100, was found on Fernandina Island. The animal was transported to a breeding center on Santa Cruz Island where genetic tests will be made. ⠀ ⠀ #galápagostortoise #galápagos #tortoise #fernandinaisland #fernandinagianttortoise #gianttortoise

The mythical giant tortoise species that was endemic to Fernandina Island of the Galápagos Archipelago and was believed to have been extinct for more than 100 years has been rediscovered. Even the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) considered it officially extinct. In the Galapagos there are 11 giant tortoise species: 5 in Isabela, 1 in San Cristóbal, 2 in Santa Cruz, one in Española, one in Pinzón and one in Santiago. The one from Fernandina is the only one found at the moment which reminds us of Solitary George that passed away without leaving descendants in June of the 2012 and with it was declared extinct. The Minister of the Environment, Marcelo Mata, confirmed it in a tweet. An expedition with specialists from the Galapagos National Park and the non-governmental organization Galápagos Conservancy located a specimen (adult female) of Chelonoidis Phantasticus. #travel #tourism #passportready #wanderlust #visiting #explorer #aroundtheworld #ecuador
Interesting News!!! 🐢🐢🐢 #repost #wigwamtours @galapagosconservancy with @get repost ・・・ BREAKING NEWS! GC’s own Wacho Tapia, Director of the Giant Tortoise Restoration Initiative, just returned from an expedition on Fernandina Island in Galapagos, during which they discovered a female tortoise. Tortoises have been thought to be extinct on Fernandina for more than a century… so this finding is truly monumental! This was an emotional high point in Wacho’s life’s work, a moment he shares here with us: “The conservation of Galapagos giant tortoises has been my world for 29 years, and I have been involved in many exciting events, including the discovery of a new species of tortoise. But this time, the emotion I feel is indescribable. To find a living tortoise on Fernandina Island is perhaps the most important find of the century. The only live specimen of the species from Fernandina (‘Chelonoidis phantasticus’) was found 112 years ago. Now we just need to
. San Cristóbal Giant Tortoise, Chelonoidis chathamensis 📍San Cristóbal, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador . The estimated historical population of giant tortoises on San Cristóbal was between 12,000 and 25,000 individuals. However, introduced predators, competitors, and vegetation change led to a catastrophic decline to only 500-750 individuals in the early 1970s. A census in November 2016 estimated the population to be 6,700 individuals indicating the species is in the process of recovery! . In other news, a female giant tortoise has been found on Fernandina island during an expedition for the first time in 113 years! Giant tortoises were thought to be extinct on that island for more than a century! . Such exciting news that demonstrates the importance of wildlife monitoring! Galapagos giant tortoise is the largest living species of tortoise in the world. Human exploitation saw a rapid decline in it's wild population, resulting in extinction of some of the subspecies. One of the best experiences ever! How cool are these giant tortoises? There were about 50 of them roaming around (some were humping each other and grunting in a disturbing manner but let’s pretend that wasn’t happening! 🤦♀️🤣) Don’t know who loved feeding the tortoises more, me, Ian or Pops! SANTA CRUZ ISLAND | GALAPAGOS | ECUADOR After arriving from San Cristobal we checked into our @airbnb which was absolutely perfect for us and headed to the famous Darwin Centre. Its the best place to see Giant Tortoises 🐢, which are only found in the Galapagos and the Seychelles. They’re in captivity as a lot of Galapagos residents kept them as pets many years ago, they gave them up to the Darwin Centre as they are not fit for the wild. Just 5 minutes walk away from the Darwin Centre is an amazing beach called Playa De La Estacion. It is a good snorkelling spot with chances of seeing plenty of colourful fish, sea lions, turtles and marine iguanas. Theres also some very cheeky birds that will steal any food you leave available and are quite happy to sit on your head and wait haha. That night we ate in what among backpackers is called Fish Street but is officially called Los Kioskos. The seafood here is incredible and is all much cheaper than the rest of the

- Colonel Dusji XIX, the Brazilian giant tortoise - Nothing is safe when he’s roaming around. Inside the house or in the garden, Dusji will find anything to feed on or to hide. As soon as temperatures rise above 20 degrees Celcius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) he’s allowed to go outside in the garden. He enjoys it SO MUCH to roam around freely in the grass! . Dusji is approximately 8 years old now but he can live up to 50 to 60 years. He’s a real part of the family. . When I measured him a while ago he was 35cm (14inch) and weight 3.5kg (7.7lb). The average length of these tortoises lies around 40cm (15.75inch), with the largest known specimen at 94 cm (37 in). They’re known as the sixth-largest tortoise species on Earth. . . . #reptiles #reptilekeeper #reptilegirl #herpetology #terrarium #fieldherping #yellowfootedtortoise #tortoise #chelonoidis #chelonoidisdenticulata #brazilian #gianttortoise

In this breeding center, there are different types of giant tortoises. These have thinner and more fragile-looking shells and their necks and legs are longer. In all, there were fifteen species of giant tortoises; however that number has been reduced and the rest are at risk. For instance, humans have already killed four so only eleven species remain and one of those. One was died relatively recently in 2012 and another seems doomed to follow as there are only fifty tortoises in that species left in the world. Facts like this send me into a deep depression — How can we stop people harming the environment? — but I suppose I need to hold onto the good: That there is a tortoise breeding area and the island people (and others) are tying to combat the problem. *** #charlesdarwinresearchstation #tortoise #gianttortoise #galapagostortoise #santacruz #galapagos #galapagosislands #archipelago #visitgalapagos #ecuador #loves ecuador #ecuadortravels #southoftheequator #southamerica
