There are so many beautiful wildflowers on the trail that I've never seen before! I keep stopping to take photos of them all so I can maybe identify them later. These ones grow near the waterfalls and I saw gorgeous pink tinged ones yesterday.

Day 14: April 14 [19.9 miles]

Day 14: April 14 [19.9 miles]

Here it is everyone. Ive been working on designing this prototype since October. (I didnt make this knife.) I designed this knife to be my backpacking knife and bushcraft companion knife. I wanted something light enough to carry backpacking, but still be full tang. I also wanted it to be able to work wood for whittling. I wanted a handle that would be super grippy when wet. And i wanted it to be high carbon steel so i could throw sparks with a rock if needed. This is what i came up with. Made by jessy. Link in the bio.
7 inches OAL
3 inch blade
1095 HC steel
Scandi grind
Rubber handle scales
Carbon fiber pins
Kydex sheath

04/18/17 • The Day of Pain

This was it. Probably about an hour of so after such a happy photo, I fell down the trail as I was descending to Charlie’s Bunion (area), and tore almost every tendon in my left knee. We stood there as I tried to put weight on it, but I knew in this moment that my thruhike attempt was at serious risk. Deep down I knew this was a hike-ending injury, but I was too determined to continue that I ended up risking my health and safety.

Don’t be stupid. Don’t hike 500 miles on a torn knee, it’ll only damage it further and make your hike miserable.

I ended up spraining my ACL, medial meniscus tears, and shredded 2/3rds of the articular cartilage off my left (distal) femur. After surgery and many months recovering, I’m finally - 2 years later - able to hike almost as good I was in this photo before the fall.

This trail changed my life; for better and for worse. I’ll take the AT everywhere I go. Scars tell stories, and man... do I tell this story all the time.

Sometimes southern California feels like the Pacific Northwest! We spent most of the day hiking/freezing in a cloud.

When you finally get yourself a pair of blue light glasses 🤓 and your eyes feel like a million bucks after a work day. 👏
You guys, I usually get the worst headaches, eye strain, and nausea from staring at my computer all day and today was a dream. Zero symptoms. 😱 May be the placebo effect, but who cares because I’m feeling great AND itsssss TACO NIGHT.
I went on Amazon and bought the first pair I found and I mean, how cute are these frames?! I’m obsessed.

Wanting more days living out of this bag and tent. Knowing that everything you need to survive and be comfortable all fits into one bag you carry on your back is surprisingly relaxing. Instead at home where I have everything I need and more yet it's more stressful. Hope to get more trips in the future where all I need is in this bag.

It will be awhile until I am able to do things like this again. The last three months recovering from surgery really has made me realize how much I take for granted. Enjoy everyday. There is always something to be thankful for.
