Robert Capa said, ‘It is not enough to have talent, you also have to be Hungarian.’ For me, one of the most important photographers in the history of photography is the Hungarian photographer André (Andor) Kertész.
.
André Kertész Polaroids: “Kertész’s use of the Polaroid SX-70 is irrevocably intertwined with the death of his wife Elizabeth (Erzsebet) in October 1977. … It was after the musician Graham Nash gave him a Polaroid camera-and with the assistance of Polaroid’s Artist Support Program, which supplied him with film--that the photographer, always interested in new techniques, saw the possibilities for intimate work offered by this innovative process. …As always with Kertész, emotion determined his photographic activity. The process was therapeutic and allowed him to reconnect with his daily practice of taking pictures-he was eighty-four years old-by reviving his interest and preserving the memory of Elizabeth in the apartment where they had lived for thirty-five years.” ‘From my window’ was published consisting of 53 Polaroids and dedicated to Elizabeth, followed by ‘The Polaroids’ in 2007.
.
The book ‘Kertész‘ “pays homage to the man Henri Cartier-Bresson considered one of his masters, reveals the continuity of Kertész’s photographic enterprise despite his apparent diversity of periods, circumstances, themes, and styles, and highlights his originality and poetic singularity… a career spanning more than seventy years-in Hungary, where he was born, in Paris, where he was one of the principal figures of the photographic avant-garde from 1925 to 1936, and then in New York, where he spent the greater part of his life without receiving the success he expected or deserved.”
