After the recent #polarvortex temperatures, the single negative digits have us here at the #AISC thinking about #Spring and what we are going to plant in our gardens this year.
.
Did you know there are some amazing native plants that can replace #ornamentalspecies (that often become #invasivespecies)?.
.
Native plants such as David's Lavender Garden Phlox, Purple Smoke Baptisia and Southcombe Double Cranesbill can replace the #invasive and prolific seed producer Dame's Rocket that is sometimes found in 'wildflower' seed mixes.

Our Jaret Daniels, associate curator and program director of the McGuire Center, is studying how introduced plant diseases affect Florida’s iconic native butterflies.
Laurel wilt, a fungus transmitted by the #invasive ambrosia beetle, is now in all Florida and can kill a tree in 4-8 weeks.
In a new study, Daniels looked at how severe declines in swamp bays and redbays caused by laurel wilt have impacted Florida’s iconic swallowtail butterflies, which rely on these trees as host plants. He saw a slight drop in swallowtail populations.
“It’s a worrisome trend,” Daniels said. “If laurel wilt continues, there’s going to be a decline in these now-common species.”

It was hard to get these pictures because Dr. Hoch kept moving his hand while he talked 🤷🏽‍♀️ invasive apple snail found while walking through Picayune Strand. Interestingly enough, snail kites have started to feed more so on these snails than the native apple snails, probably helping to relieve pressure on the natives populations.

Eat more INVASIVE GREEN IGUANA!
Thank you to @kaaboocayman for inviting to be part of something truly special in Cayman. I’m thrilled to have had a chance to voice the importance of curbing the population of invasive green iguana and Lionfish in Cayman through eating them. Ecologically and economically it makes sense.

Weed of the Month Alert! The February WOM is Spanish heath. Spanish heath is found few and far between here on the Oregon coast. Please let us know if you see this plant on the Southern Oregon coast! 🌱 The concern with this plant is that because it is so similar to gorse and broom (when talking reproduction and climate preference), that it has the potential to take over in a similar fashion. 🌿 The white bell shaped flowers are a dead giveaway when trying to identify this plant. It stands much thicker and wider than Scotch or French broom, but grows up similar to them both.

Recently we’ve been hearing about the Asian carp as an “invasive” species in the Great Lakes, and that eating the fish is a good solution. A few friends asked for my opinion on the topic. Should we eat carp to help save the Great Lakes? Here’s a spoiler alert: no.

The carp is a fish, and fishes, like birds and mammals, are sentient. Fish can feel and think, they have self awareness and like to be petted. And yet we treat them as if they were inanimate objects. Each year humans kill an estimated 0.97-2.74 trillion fish. They die a painful and lengthy death by asphyxiation and/or live gutting. The purpose of this large scale carnage is one, satisfying human taste buds.

Killing and causing suffering to sentient beings have moral implications. I view fish and all nonhuman animals as equal in their right to live. They’re entitled to be free from cruelty, exploitation and manipulation. Hence, I don’t eat them, not even when the media and federal agencies promote the notion that they’re destructive to the environment.

please read my blog post “Who is the invasive one?” http://imananimaltoo.com/2019/02/15/who-is-the-invasive-one/
