ON THE EXAMINING OF WORDS

Take the word, the concept, the idea of “people”, for instance: Who exactly are people? Are all human creatures the same? Does pigmentation play a genetic role in classifying people into categories, divisions, and labels? Are those people who have no or little qualms about committing genocide the same people who vehemently, passionately, and with every sense of the word Oppose that type of thought, philosophy, idealism, and consequent action?
Thru questioning we examine. We look at lexical items and contextualize them. We discuss. We ponder and discuss some more. We unlock the door into Language. (Excerpt from TIC, The ICLA Curriculum, for the LAT-Tesol course)

In my latest German video, I’m talking about one of my favorite Christmas carols! 🎶 Listen along to hear why I like it so much and to learn the original German lyrics. Check out my YouTube channel and Facebook page to see the entire video with subtitles. 📺 Do you have a favorite Christmas song? Let me know which one you love 👇🏼

🇩🇪 O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!
Du grünst nicht nur zur Sommerzeit,
Nein auch im Winter, wenn es schneit.
O Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum,
wie treu sind deine Blätter!

🇺🇸 O Christmas tree, O Christmas tree
How loyal are your leaves/needles!
You’re green not only in the summertime,
No, also in the winter when it snows.

So you've decided to dump the teachers and learn a foreign language on your own. Hooray! But where do you start?

Many times, learning a foreign language is easier than you think and most of them are within the reach of a normal tech-tired and sleep-deprived modern brain 😉

So the first thing you do is make sure you know the alphabet - boring, but that's the pill you have to take! However, you don't learn it as it is, there's no big point in that; instead, you learn the letters and primarily their pronunciation as parts of words and phrases which you pick specifically for yourself. All these phrases should be relative to you, so you just need to monitor what you say every day (even better if you're carrying out this analysis while abroad). Don't just learn the phrases from the dictionary list - make your own list. Are you used to saying

LANGUAGE PROOFING THE ENVIRONMENT⁣

Another technique I read about the other day is to take pictures of your immediate surroundings and then basically make sure that you know the vocabulary for every object that you have in sight. For bonus points you'd construct sentences for using those objects. ⁣
⁣
Example: die Zahnbürste (the toothbrush) <-> die Zähne putzen (to brush your teeth).⁣
⁣
Here's an example of some items you can find in a bathroom (not mine - not sure my flatmates would appreciate me posting something from the house. Germans & Privacy 💁‍♂️)⁣

Learning together is so much more fun. The little linguist and I had great fun at Concert Kids in #hernehill this morning learning about the harp. At Little Linguists’ Library we believe kids enjoy learning so much more when the adults are learning too! #harp #classicalmusicforkids #learningwithkids #bilingualkids #childrensbooks #picturebooks #languagelearning #languagelearner #classicalmusic

Relearning one of life’s many lessons... speak the language the people understand, and if the people you are speaking to don’t understand your language, find new people! This is really quite simple and yet so incredibly hard for many of us (myself included) to understand at times. How often do we try over and over and over again to MAKE someone see our point of view or to understand where we are coming from and it simply doesn’t work?? That’s because they aren’t able to understand your language, for whatever reason (in my experience it is usually ignorance or fear) and therefore continuing the conversation is fruitless. #speakup #speakout #findyourpeople #languagelearning #communication #understanding #isntalwayseasy #breakingbarriers #notyourpeople #findyourvoice

Yesterday we already learned about the origin of Santa's reindeer. Their names however come from the 1823 poem "A Visit from St. Nicholas": Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder, Blixem (the last two sometimes known as Donner and Blitzen). The story about Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer was written 115 years later by Robert L. May for a chain of department stores. #tgvadventskalender #topical #german #vocabulary #christmas #weihnachten #advent #learngerman #learninggerman #germanvocabulary #language #learning #languagelearning #deutschlernen  #deutsch #deutschesprache #deutschkurs #wortschatz #sprache #germanwords #basicgermanwords #germanlanguage #languagelover #germany #allemand #aleman

FREQUENCY & RELEVANCY
The last post was about finding out which German words were the most frequently used and then to learn those first, in order to save time. That's really about two things;

1. The 80/20 Rule. Which means: by learning the most oftenly used words first, your comprehension of the language increases faster than if you would learn any random word that you don't know. From the subtitles that I used, about 2% of the words made up 80% of usage. That's pretty crazy if you think about it.

2. Relevancy. By using subtitles from show's that you would be watching in any case, you ensure that the words that you learn are RELEVANT for you.
This has been something that has really peeved me in some of the German courses I've taken. Instead of focusing on topics and vocabulary that are relevant to us, we've spent three hours learning the intricitate details of the German education system.
Of course, I'd like to learn things about how the German society works, but it just wasn't relevant at the stage of proficiency where I was at at that point. .
