Smiley Hunter - this is a juvenile bobcat I have had the opportunity to observe since he was a young kitten. Today I watched him skillfully slink along a ravine until he reached his hiding/hunting place, all I could see were his ears and the very top of his head. He stayed still for about 7 minutes until a ground squirrel got close enough, and all it took was one swift and calculated pounce and he had caught his lunch. Winter time is one of the best times to try to find signs of wildlife. Why is that? Snow, of course! When critters walk through the snow, they leave behind evidence — tracks in this case. Last May, I had the incredible experience of photographing a bobcat mom and her two kittens in the windowsill of an abandoned building. Getting to see kittens at such a young age was an incredible, once in a lifetime experience. Bobcats frequently make the use of abandoned buildings as shelter for their kittens. Taking The Lead - To close out 2018, Vishal and I were fortunate to photograph a 5 year old female Bobcat Notch, and her nearly fully grown male kitten whom we named Stripes, after his bold leg stripes. Bobcats are solitary creatures, females are extremely aggressive to each other, males very aggressive to other males, and males and females are aggressive to one and another. Notch will eventually leave Stripes to fend for himself, although her hunting and survival lessons will stay with him for his lifetime. For Valentine’s Day, we thought we’d post a short video of two bobcats doing their mating dance. Seeing courtship among bobcats like this is quite rare. However, photographer/bobcat enthusiast Cyn Cross was in the right place at the right time to witness this event. She saw the cats while in a local park, and was able to make a great video of this rarely observed scene.
