Have you ever felt lost, unmotivated, without a sense of direction or belonging? I felt that way when I first started doing marine mammal research. Who did I think I was? I was a Forest Ecologist / GIS Specialist who knew nothing about marine mammals. I didn't know the difference between a cetacean and a pinniped. I didn't know the difference between a seal and a sea lion, or between a baleen whale and a toothed whale.
.
.
It's taken time for me to grow into this new field. To find my confidence and convince myself I belong. And something that has helped centre me are tokens. Tokens to trigger a reminder anytime I'm at a conference, or a networking event, or my code won't work the way I need it to, and I find myself questioning why I'm even there. Yes, you are worthy. Yes, you belong. Yes, you have everything you need to figure it out.

This arrived in the mail today. It's so beautiful I could cry. @orcalifes

Male Sperm Whale joins the pod 🐋💙 📸 video by @jeffreyhondaphotography where he explains “This was one of the most AMAZING moments that I have had in this life! While swimming with these 3 young females, a large male the size of a school bus came out of the blue to join them. The clicking sound you hear is their “coda,” which is their form of communication. I could feel something scanning me and was confused how I could feel that from the females. You can hear my surprise when I figure out that it was the male joining us that was clicking. This male also decides to bellow out a nice cry as the group converges in front of me. I have never seen or heard footage of a sperm whale doing this before. A sperm whale can click at 236dB. It is the loudest animal on the planet. Scientists believe that they can hear each other from thousands of miles away. They can destroy the human ear and they can literally vibrate a person to death. They also have the largest brain of any animal on the planet. Since I was 7 years old it has been a dream to dive with the largest predator on the planet. Every time I get in the water with these giants, it’s a dream come true! This footage was taken under Dominican government permit.”⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Part 2, on (mostly) good news for orca🤙

As many of yall know the last couple weeks have brought promising news from Russia's 'whale jail' located in Srednyaya Bay, Nakhodka. After only 3 days in of the expert's visit (with special invite from Russian President Vladimir Putin) to the facility, Putin signed an agreement of support for the freeing of the whales being held captive in the frigid Russian pens after having been illegally captured from the wild almost a year ago now with the intent of being sold to the Chinese marinepark/aquaria industry. With the 8 experts assessing each individual animal and with Putin on board, the agreement between the Governor of the Primorsky Region (O.N. Kozhemyako), the president of the Ocean's Future Society (Jean-Michel Cousteau) and executive director of the Whale Sanctuary Project (Charles Vinick) was made assuring the rehabilitation and release of ideally every single one of these 10 orca and 87 beluga back to their home waters. While this is incredible news, this is no easy task. Rehabilitation will take time... the animals need to be spread out through all the available pens giving them more space, fish need to be fed below the surface, live fish need to be incorporated as soon as possible and hunting instincts must return (this ecotype of orca feed on mammals in the wild and so they will have to learn on their own to switch from fish to mammals once released in the wild, another endeavor, but completely possible). A number of medical issues have also arisen from their year in frigid confinement, and treatment must take place unfortunately before they are released. These animals must also build up their weight and strength and swimming. Each animal is unique in their level of

We love marine life!🔥
..
When we see whales, manatees or sharks underwater we are even more impressed and realize that we are actually some kind of small to midsize mammal.😅

At first glance, this photo seems alarming—AP12’s ribs are prominent, suggesting she may be ill or not getting enough to eat. HOWEVER! This is a perfect example of how a single photo taken at a strange angle can make healthy killer whales look emaciated! In reality, AP12 is a chunky, rotund whale. After I took this photo, I watched her cavort around with her family, with no ribs visible whatsoever. Evaluating a killer whale’s body condition can be tricky and conclusions should never be made based off one photo taken at a weird angle like this one! #orca #killerwhale #alaska #kachemakbay #homeralaska #whale #whalewatching #cetacean #blackfish #pacificnorthwest #westcoast #ocean #nature #sea #wildlife #marinemammal #biology

With only approximately 400 individuals left, North Atlantic right whales are endangered.
.
They were devastated by whaling in the 19th century and have since struggled to rebound. 2017 was a crisis year for right whales with 17 confirmed mortalities – 12 in Canadian waters – and no new births.
.
This year, seven baby whales have been born and, as seasonal feeders, they’re making their way to Canadian waters for the summer to feed on copepods! Learn more about right whales at Oceana.ca/Marine-Life.

During my visit to Alaska last summer, we made a pit stop in Seward for a day to hike out to the Exit Glacier. Lucky for us, the Sea Otters were in abundance and nof feeling shy! We observed quite a few individuals alternating between diving, eating, grooming, and play-fighting. They are truly as adorable as everyone says!! Photographed at the Seward Marina.
