Mid90s (2018) Review Release Date: October 19th, 2018 Starring: Sunny Suljic, Lucas Hedges, Na-kel Smith, Gio Galicia, Ryder McLaughlin, Alexa Demie, Katherine Waterston, Olan Prenatt Plot Summary: In 1990s Los Angeles, 13-year-old Stevie escapes his turbulent home life by hanging out with a new group of friends he meets at a local skate shop, plunging him into a world of fun, danger and excitement. Jonah Hill impressed me with his directorial debut. Mid90s captures the 90s from a kid's perspective, and I think that's why I liked it so much. It wasn't necessarily the best acting or deepest story (partly because all but one kid never acted before), but it works. The four thirds camera had to grow on me, but by the 15 minute mark, it added to the 90s vibe. This movie definitely has Jonah Hill's comedic influence in the jokes and language, some of which were a little questionable for the kids' ages, but I still laughed throughout most of it. It follows a young kid in mid 90s Los Angeles as he struggles, with family, friends, sex, drugs, and his own identity. This is film is more of a snapshot or character portrait than a narrative, but that doesn’t make it any less powerful. And while it is rather short, it offers some sense of satisfaction and conflict resolution by the end. One of the best aspects of the film is that it shows the audience its important details, rather than telling them through useless dialogue. The characters facial expressions and body language show us all we need to know without filler. This is aided by the camera’s narrow aspect ratio, which brings us closer emotionally to each shot.
