3 ROW VARIATIONS FOR BJJ

Pulling exercises are often neglected in the weight room, in favour of bench pressing and dips. And for a lot of grapplers, there's too much emphasis on pull-ups (which tend to compound the shoulder issues the sport has given us, rather than repair them).
.
Aim to perform more 'pull' movements than 'push' ones throughout your joints training week, and see how much better your shoulders feel!
.
1) CHEST SUPPORTED ROW: I prefer these variations to bent-over rows (particularly for older athletes), as our lower backs take enough punishment on the mats each week. Initiate the movement by retracting your shoulder blades, and pin them down towards your butt. Avoid 'shrugging' towards the ears.
.
2) ISOMETRIC HOLD CHEST SUPPORTED ROW: Same exercise, but hold the movement at the top for 5 seconds. Building your isometric squeeze strength is hugely beneficial for jiu-jitsu, and is a great way to toughen up an exercise without having to load on more weight (and possibly sacrifice technique)

3) ALTERNATE ISOMETRIC HOLD CHEST SUPPORTED ROW: Perform this one slowly, and aim to keep your bodyweight in the centre of the bench.

The aim on these row exercises is to prioritise the PERFORMANCE of the movement over the amount of weight you can lift. Building good control and stability in these areas will make your shoulders more durable for BJJ. Try them out and let me know how ya get on 😎🤙

Both took extreme commitment and stubbornness.  I wonder what I should do for the next 20.
