When you are out in nature do you feel a sense of peace and calm come over you? I do... it is the closest to serenity that I’ve ever felt. It doesn’t matter if I’m walking through the snow or tucked safely in my warm car, looking out at Alaska warms my soul.
.
Growing up in the desert, I never knew views like this even existed. Frozen rivers that crackle and pop - who knew that was a thing? Exploring and going on adventures is what my life’s dreams are made of. 🙌🏼

Breast Hill - Ahuriri River

From Wanaka I hitch hiked up the road sections to where the trail picked up again on the Gladstone track along lake Hawea. From the edge of the lake it’s a steep set of switchbacks and rugged ridge line up to Pakituhi hut. The views looking south from the ridge take in the Otago countryside, Lake Hawea, and Mt. Aspiring National Park’s peaks in the distance. As it often goes on the Te Araroa, the hard work definitely pays off with awesome views. On the way up I met a fellow NOBO from the Yukon in Canada who was mysteriously playing a Thai reed flute from the shade of a massive boulder along the ridge. From the Pakituhi hut the trail weaves its way along exposed highland on a 4WD track to Stody’s Hut which is an older 6 bunk musterers hut with dirt floor and fireplace. From Stody’s hut the trail steeply descends to the Timaru River. From this point the track alternates between the forest and the riverbed with ten river crossings. The river valley sides are very steep and hard work. The silver lining is plenty of refreshing swim spots along the way. Along this section I bumped into a couple Canadian SOBOS who had hiked the AT like myself. We had a kind hearted chat and reminisced about the AT. It’s beautiful how trails bring people together from around the world. Further ahead I met more SOBOS at Top Timaru hut and we exchanged tips and ate lunch before I took on the ascent to Mount Martha Saddle. I spent the night alone in a rustic old shepherds hut. The following morning crossing the Avon burn I arrived at the banks of the Ahuriri River where I was lucky and managed to hitch a ride out of the valley with a Kiwi trout fisherman in his truck going north to the town of Twizel to position myself for the side trip to Mt. Cook National Park.

Current RV status: No Ford issues found. Jayco has sent our RV back to the dealership today to make modifications for the lean. They still can not determine or identify what has caused this issue. But they are making “modifications” to help with the. Seems odd to have a “solution” without determining what the issue actually is, but Jayco told us that this is what they are going to do at this point since it’s been over 3 weeks. Hopefully down the road, the issues do not continue. We were told we’d get our home on wheels back on Monday.. fingers still crossed🤞🏻In the meantime, we’ll find another local place to hike and explore. Fresh air and nature makes everything better 💚
