Downtown @cityofdenver shines like a jewel reflected in Sloan’s Lake earlier this evening. No one knows the exact story of Sloan’s Lake because there was no lake when Denver was settled in the mid 1850’s. With a patent for the land from President Andrew Johnson, homesteader Thomas Sloan began farming the land in 1866. Legend has it that Sloan dug into an aquifer and flooded an area larger than the current 177 acres. I’m curious how it stays full now... Located outside of Northwest Denver, today’s feature is Rocky Flats Pond! The Flatirons, wind turbines, and charming buildings make it hard to believe this area was once the site of a nuclear testing facility. However, it has since become the Rocky Flats Wildlife Refuge where it provides critical habitat for numerous species.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been visiting Morrill Hall, exploring every room, reading all the information panels and staring up at some of the largest mammals to walk the earth: Mammoths, Nebraska's state fossil. It doesn’t matter how many times you visit a museum there is always something new or undiscovered to draw you in. I would say my love for paleontology and the natural world was energized by those visits to Morrill Hall year after year.
In 1871, just a few years after the University of Nebraska was chartered, the states museum was founded by Erwin Barbour and with Charles Morrill whom supported Barbours passion for the museums collection. Over the many decades since its founding the museum has seen numerous changes from a small room in Nebraska Hall, fire, restoration, new exhibits, added collections, to the construction of its final resting place in the building dedicated to Charles Morrill.
This Friday, February 15th marks a 150-year legacy for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln followed by the grand opening on Saturday of Morrill Halls 4th floor. After 50 plus years the new installment will be dedicated to showcasing Nebraska’s biological and geological diversity in new, more interactive ways. The 4th floor will weave a watershed, ecoregions, species, and us together into a story following a timeline through the past, present and future state of our earth.
I am honored to say that the photo above will be in the new floor accompanied by many more photographs and displays that exemplify how beautiful and breathtaking this fly-over-state truly is; once you dip below the clouds.
Although Morrill Hall has seen its fair share of change one simple fact has remained the same, its mission: To inspire and educate the public, while providing a window into our states natural and cultural history in the hope that more people will come to “Cherish Nebraska”.

Sunshine Beach is a public access to Seminoe Reservoir which is a 1 million acre feet Bureau of Reclamation reservoir located upstream from the dam and power plant. The fluctuating levels of water in the bay throughout the year exemplify the effects of deciding how much water should be stored or released. If there’s one thing to learn from this Time-Lapse Tuesday, it’s not to leave a car parked close to the edge of the water for too long on this beach.

In the upper reaches of North America’s watersheds, one will find a charismatic chunky gray bird dipping and diving underwater in clear, fast-flowing streams. This bird is called the American dipper and is North America’s only aquatic songbird. Photographer and conservationist Mike Forsberg fell in love with the American dipper on a college fishing trip. After learning about these birds and their unique behaviors of dipping and diving underwater, he set out on a mission to document their natural history. This included photographing their behavior above water and below. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This 9 minute film titled, “A Trout with Feathers” follows Mike on his quest to photograph the American dipper diving underwater in the Poudre River in Colorado and will introduce you to lifelong birder, retired school teacher, and ex-Harley rider Steve Den who helps Mike along the way.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This film is part one of the multipart series @mforsbergphoto and @mariahwind are working on for @plattebasin that will highlight species within the Platte Basin. Each species story will include a written narrative and photographic essay done by Mike and then a short film about the species produced by Mariah. ⠀

For this week’s location feature, Lake Agnes’ resume:
- The lake sits 11,000 feet above sea level and is home to PBT’s highest camera in the North Platte watershed.
-The water that accumulates in Lake Agnes eventually feeds the Michigan River, a primary tributary in the upper North Platte.
-Lake Agnes experiences very long winters and a very short summers which might help us appreciate Nebraska winters a little more.
Truthfully, Lake Agnes doesn’t need a resume to get this job. Just look at that view!

When I seeded this prairie with @nature_ne in 2016 for restoration, I feared that the high winds would cause poor germination success. To my relief, not only had the prairie grown lush when I visited it last summer, but even some of the less common species had started growing, like this Prairie Gentian (Gentiana puberulenta). See what else grew in my new blog post, linked in bio.⠀

Cuando sembré esta pradera con @nature_ne en 2016 para restoración, temía que los altos vientos causaría mala germinación. “In 2015, I began a quest to document the life of North America’s only aquatic songbird - the American dipper. I did it in my home watershed, the Platte River Basin, in its upper reaches in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. Now four years later, because time never stops and stories are never really finished as much as they are taken away from you, here’s an essay with a portfolio of images, along with a short documentary film produced by my colleague @mariahwind with Platte Basin Timelapse - PBT for short. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
PBT was created in 2011. It is dedicated to telling the stories of a watershed in motion, and to do so takes a village. One small part of my effort is a series of natural history-based stories that will roll out over this next year - pieces I have been chipping away at for years. Trumpeter swans in the Nebraska Sandhills are next, then bighorn sheep in the Wildcat Hills, and then the role of beaver as hubs of biodiversity along the Platte River, and so on. These indelible creatures are the wildlife among us in a surprisingly rich watershed in the heart of the Great Plains. They stand as symbols for ecosystem health, they are survivors whose stories help shine a light on conservation challenges past, present and future, and they deserve to exist in this landscape just like we do, beyond any utilitarian purpose, for their intrinsic beauty and for their own sake. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I hope you enjoy the dippers at least half as much as I have getting to know them. It has been a privilege to glimpse below the surface into their remarkable watery world. They are a trout with feathers...” ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It's Time-lapse Tuesday! Our camera captures the changes in stream flow in Camp Ashland's East Slough. This recently restored area is fed by groundwater from a nearby wetland. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Natural Resources currently monitors the health of the aquatic life in this water which coincides with the US Geological Survey’s efforts to measure many variables related to water quality.

This prairie didn't exist three years ago. I helped @nature_ne plant it in 2016 and last summer I went back to see it for the first time. Read the story of what I found at the link in my bio.⠀

As the sun set on the prairie, dozens of tiny moths appeared on the sunflowersflowers around me to feed on their nectar. Pollinators come in all shapes and sizes.⠀

Happy World Wetlands Day! The first photo and video in this post were taken at a saltwater spring last winter, located just north of Lincoln. Throughout the winter, saline groundwater, bubbling up from the Dakota Aquifer, keeps this area free of ice. This spring was shown to me late last winter. At the time I was in the second year of a project photographing the biodiversity of Lancaster County’s saline wetlands. I was starting to feel burned out from the project, ignorantly thinking I had seen just about everything these wetlands had to offer. Sitting on the edge of this spring on a frigid February morning as the water bubbled up made me realize why I fell in love with these endangered wetlands in the first place. Despite being only a few miles away from a city of nearly 300,000 people, wild places still exist within their narrow confines.

Throughout history, wetlands have been maligned as stagnant mosquito refuges, impediments to progress, and havens for corruption (“drain the swamp”). While I have suffered my fair share of mosquito bites over the past few years, that temporary discomfort has been worthy payment for the moments of natural beauty I have been fortunate enough to witness. I’ve seen American avocets displaying for each other seconds after mating, hundreds of snow geese taking off in the blue light of early morning, and tiger beetles voraciously hunting on salt flats. Even if you never step foot in a wetland, you benefit from them everyday. Wetlands help to filter out pollutants from our wastewater, reduce the risk of flooding, and help decrease erosion. I hope that going forward, we can start to give these often misunderstood ecosystems the respect they deserve. #plattebasintimelapse #worldwetlandsday #salinewetlands #nebraska

An aerial view of wildlife trails on a restored saline wetland just north of Lincoln, Nebraska. The long white pipe that cuts through the middle of the frame is a part of the restoration process which pumps saline water from the Dakota Aquifer onto the land. This photo was taken on an excursion to improve my drone flying skills. Stay tuned for more... #plattebasintimelapse #salinewetlands #protectprairie #drone #dronephotograpy #lincolnne #nebraska
