There's no better time to plan a trip to Zambia! As the dry season progresses from June to November, vegetation becomes sparse and wildlife congregates around diminishing water sources. With perfectly balanced temperatures, September is by far the best month to explore the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi by way of your own two feet, and you'll want to enquire soon to ensure you have the best guides and top choice of accommodation. Get in touch with one of our Journeysmiths to begin your African adventure!

An “up-close and personal” encounter with elephants has a completely different meaning when they walk right into the Mfuwe Lodge (South Luangwa National Park in Zambia) to watch you hang out during the midday break in the open air lounge!⠀
⠀
Every encounter with those majestic animals is fascinating and watching them triggers wonderful emotions. ⠀

Take some time out.

Inbetween all the excitement of a #walkingsafaris in the #LuangwaValley, it’s important to give yourself some time for #restandrelaxation. Time to absorb the natural delights of your surroundings - bird song, monkey chatter, the odd puku whistle and the rustle of the ebony branches overhead.

This is our last post as #RemoteAfricaSafaris, thanks for following our takeover! Keep following us on @remoteafrica #relaxonsafari #safaris #SouthLuangwa #atnaturespace #zambia #chikokotrails #walkingsafaris

I took over 2000 pictures in 17 days in Africa. Over the next couple of weeks I’ll boil a handful of them down to 26 posts (hopefully two posts per day). Each post will follow a different theme running from A (Animals) to Z (Zanzibar). Keep checking back... #africa #iexplore #justgoshoot #camerateur #discoverglobe #jj_travelogue #naturelovers #wildlifephotographer #naturephotography #planetearth #wildlife #wild #safari #giraffe #giraffes #mikumi #southluangwa

Get Close with Shenton Safaris

Shenton Safaris’ Kaingo and Mwamba camps are the creations of the Shenton family, which has a proud history of three generations of wildlife conservation. Derek Shenton, who built Kaingo in 1992 and now runs these camps with his wife Juliet, is the son of Barry Shenton, former Warden of Kafue National Park and grandson of Capt. Lindsay Shenton, former warden of Hluhluwe National Park. Kaingo and Mwamba are renown for exceptional game-viewing in a beautiful, yet relaxed atmosphere.

We have specialised, photographic hides guaranteed to get you close enough to the wildlife to capture incredible moments– in complete safety. The most famous are the Hippo Hide, Elephant Hide, Carmine Bee-eater Hide, and Last Waterhole Hide. We also have a host of mobile rigs for on-the-spot wildlife action. National Geographic, BBC and Discovery channel use these hides regularly in filming wildlife documentaries.
Experts have dubbed South Luangwa one of the greatest wildlife sanctuaries in the world, and not without reason. The concentration of game around the Luangwa River and its Ox-bow lagoons is among the most intense in Africa. Shenton Safaris is located deep within the wealthiest game viewing area of the South Luangwa National Park. The regions surrounding their camps are incredibly abundant in wildlife, particularly the big cats. There are ten leopards, and three active Lion Prides in this area, named the Mwamba-Kaingo Pride, the Kapanda Pride and the Hollywood Pride, the latter called so due to the vast amount of time documentary filmmakers have spent following them.

Second day of our @remoteafrica
Instagram takeover 😀

A room with a view!

The family chalet at #TafikaCamp looks out over the dramatic #LuangwaRiver which winds its way through the #LuangwaValley. The river is home to one of Zambia’s most formidable reptiles, the #nilecrocodile, and one of its most impressive mammals, the #hippo.

Take a guess at how long the Luangwa river meanders through Zambia?

1. 1100km

2. 750km

3. 2574km
