Did you know 🔎 your common cold 🦠 can be contagious for up to 4 days before symptoms begin, and usually during the first couple days of symptoms?? 😖

Happy International Bat Appreciation Day! Invasives are definitely impacting bat populations. Bats get stuck in burdock burrs and die and White Nose Syndrome is a fungus that has decimated Brown bat populations in eastern Canada. The Community Bat Programs of BC says that feral cats are one of the primary causes of bat mortality in towns (bcbats.ca). Lillooet has 13 of the 15 bat species in BC and many of them are designated At Risk due to low population numbers and/or loss of habitat. Bats are an important part of ecosystem that eat their weight in insects daily. #invasives #stopthespread #protectbats

Giant Hogweed growing on a tree! As if our job isn't hard enough controlling them on the ground, we have to start finding them growing on trees 😲.
Just goes to show the problem of seed dispersal - hogweed seeds will spread far and wide and if conditions are okay they'll readily grow wherever they land - even on a tree....
The good news is that this one got a dose of herbicide, so it won't go on to grow and flower and spread seeds itself. .

The munching machines have arrived!
We know they are along a popular walking route - but we're all better off without the #GiantHogweed and our team of jumpers-with-legs just want to get on with their work.

So, please make sure you close the gate behind you and keep your dogs on a lead in the fenced off area.

Our new sheep volunteers are here 🐑! We are doing some trials to see how effective sheep are in grazing invasive Giant hogweed.
They happily munch the hogweed leaves alongside other vegetation and don't suffer any ill-effects from its toxic sap.
The sheep are in the woodland upriver of Macduff distillery in Macduff, Aberdeenshire.
Please keep dogs on a lead in this woodland now so you don't disturb them as they go about their important conservation work.

UPDATE: Unusually high levels of flu activity have been seen in most states and territories this year. The national reporting rate was more than three times the average for this time of year.
Vaccination is the most important measure we have to prevent influenza and its complications. The more people who are vaccinated, the less likely that the flu will spread in the community. Most people will develop immunity after a flu shot within 2-3 weeks. Now (mid-April) is the best time to vaccinate to allow immunity to develop before we reach peak flu season (usually August). #instigo #pharmacycatalyst #communityimmunity #flu #flushots #stopthespread

Species Highlight: Knotweed was originally found on the inhospitable slopes of volcanoes in Japan, knotweeds are extremely fast growing and can cause damage to infrastructure like house foundations and sidewalks. The stems resemble bamboo and the heart shape leaves branch alternatively along the stems. Flowers are white, branched clusters that bloom in August or September. It is a perennial plant that spreads rapidly by its deep root system as well as from stem fragments. It can grow up to 5m in height. #invasiveplants #stopthespread #lriss

The UK has a single native species of crayfish, the White-clawed Crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes). Sadly, an invasive species of crayfish imported into the UK in the 1970’s is wiping it out. The American Signal Crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) is bigger, stronger and outcompetes our native species for both food and habitat. It also carries a fungal crayfish plague which barely affects it, but which is fatal to our natives. It’s become so bad that White-clawed Crayfish are classed as endangered on the IUCN red list, after numbers have fallen by between 50-80% across Europe.
.
Once Signal Crayfish invade a waterbody, it’s exceedingly hard to get rid of them. It’s almost impossible to do so without wiping out other life. But something needs to be done. Current work involves attempting to protect the surviving isolated populations of White-clawed Crayfish. Under the EC Habitats Directive, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) must be set up wherever White-clawed Crayfish habitat exists. Efforts are also being made to setup “Ark Sites”, where uninfected native crayfish can be relocated to.
.
How can we help? Whilst most of us might never get to see a crayfish in the water, the crayfish plague can be transmitted by us through contamination of our clothes, fishing gear, boats, etc. So remember, if you get in the water, always Check, Clean and Dry afterwards. www.nonnativespecies.org/checkcleandry
