Happy world whale day everyone! Pictured here is a Norway Bowhead Whale and they are truly spectacular cetaceans. Once pushed to the brink of extinction, these guys made a remarkable comeback and are some the most beautiful inhabitants of the arctic. And if it weren't for Bowheads, Humpbacks, Blue whales and many other cetaceans, there would be an empty feeling wrenched deep inside of me regarding my passion. Whales have influenced me to have a never ending curiosity and to hold a more broadened perception of what meets my eyes day to day. -@chandlerrincon

Happy #WorldWhaleDay

Ten years in the bushes does no favors to any boat, especially a wooden one.
Each of the steam bent frames on this dory had shrunk so much that they had pulled up from the bottom fairly dramatically. This meant they were basically providing no support to the overall shape of the boat. After many a deliberation and lots of advice. I decided to use carefully shaped shims of Alaskan Yellow Cedar to take up the space beneath the frames. The idea being that the soft wood can compress slightly if the frames swell. Each frame had also been simply nailed in place so over time they had worked almost completely free, allowing the frames to be pulled up by hand. Definitely not good. Instead I bedded, predrilled, and screwed the frames and each of the 18 shims in place. Screws are not the best choice for this but because I was working by myself they were really the only option. Their other benefit is they don’t require making anymore holes through the boat like rivets or clinch nails would.
The boat is now noticeably stronger even without the thwarts in place. It’s now time to move onto the final and very long process of finishing and protecting all the surfaces of the boat.
Time invested: ~202hrs
Money invested: ~$540

All along the Pacific Coast, life has relied on herring for thousands of years. Archaeological records from up to 10,700 years ago show incredible abundances, and herring bones have been found consistently in ancient village sites from Puget Sound to Alaska. At the beginning of next month, @fisheriesoceanscan is allowing over 20,000 tons of herring to be removed from the Salish Sea - that's approximately 130 million herring. This number could feed 100 humpback whales all summer, or up to 900,000 10lb Chinook for a year.

If DFO is trying to save Southern Residents, how can they allow this amount of Chinook prey to be removed to feed farmed fish, aquariums, and livestock? If fisheries management is so good, why is there only one viable commercial herring fishery left? Over 800 gentile manatees like the ones viewed here DIED from the Red Tide here in Florida due to the high nutrient loading caused by decades of Government sanctioned aquatic plant management! We must end Glyphosate and other chemical use that are being sprayed right into our dring water...our aquifers! We must switch to mechanical harvest now! Yesterday a scientific report came out stating that if your exposed to glyphosate you have a 41% great chance of getting cancer! Everyong in Florida has been exposed to Glyphosate for decades! We spoke and the FWC listened! Help bring an end to the state sanctioned spraying of glyphosate in Florida's waterways once and for all!

Glyphosate is the main chemical found in most chemical herbicides (weed killers). Its being sprayed in our fresh water systems, which in turn gets into our aquifers - the water we drink, bathe in, cook with, wash our clothes with...
Glyphosate has been linked to certain cancers and health problems in humans, as well the death of NON-TARGET species, such as native aquatic plants, amphibians, fish and waterfowl, leaving large areas of our lakes and tributaries with oxygen deprived DEAD ZONES.
Nutrient run-off has also been linked to exaserbated effects of red tide, which in 2018 set records, with the deaths of several HUNDREDS of manatees, turtles, dolphins, sharks, fish and sea birds.
Florida has the most diverse range of flora and fauna in the United States and it's currently all at risk due to man-made causes. It's up to us to use our voices to protect our greatest natural resources!

Let's keep
this momentum going!

Today it’s World Whale Day and I would like to take the opportunity to emphasize the importance of respecting the giants of the ocean. Rising sea temperatures, oil drilling, fishing, tourism... it’s not looking good for the whales. Show them your respect by eliminating or reducing your meat (and fish!) consumption, or preferably ditch all animal products, avoid plastic as much as possible, participate in beach clean-ups, support ocean conservation initiatives like @sealegacy - there’s so much we can do ourselves. #WHPUpToMe and I would like to introduce #WHPConservation to raise awareness for our oceans and planet 💙

Are you going through something?

I don’t have all the answers but I’ve been to battle to many times on my own, until I was standing on the last battle field I thought I would ever stand on. .

It was then I realized I was armed but I had disarmed myself from God. (Excerpt from my book to come.) Next time, maybe it’s today you are battling something big or small either way Matthew 16:24 says - Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. ✝️🙏🏽 ♥️

Recycle anything & everything you are able to. Reduce your carbon footprint by avoiding meat and products that are mass produced. It’s #WorldWhaleDay so here’s the moment where I peaked last year when I had a close encounter with this baby Grey Whale. Grey Whales have the longest migration, from their birthing lagoons in Baja California, Mexico, to their feeding grounds in the Bering Sea. That first migration for the young calves can be deadly. From fishing boats to killer whales, a tough journey awaits this young cetacean.

Here is a super playful baby humpback. It’s always difficult to decide weather to leave the camera on the boat so I can be more agile and play with the whales, or weather to bring my camera and try to capture moments like these.

Today is a great day because its world whale day 🐋! One of my favorite close up shots I was able to capture. These creatures are so intelligent and have endless amount of curiosity. This baby was so playful it would swim right up to you and roll over to show off its white belly. Squinting its eyes at us, makes my heart melt thinking about the moment. My favorite time of the year is traveling to meet these beautiful animals in the warm waters of Tonga. The more time I spend in the water and interacting with the wildlife in the sea the more curiosity, love, and connection I have to the ocean. I hope that in sharing my travels and experiences it brings us all closer to the creatures in the water world and deepens our connection to them. We have lots to do to clean up our impact on the earth and reverse the damage being done. #worldwhaleday

The Southern Resident Killer Whales have a new baby! Southern Residents have not had a successful pregnancy in three years. There's too much boat traffic in the Salish Sea, they don't find enough salmon to eat, they are exposed to a lot of toxins and because the population exists of only 74 orcas, inbreeding is a huge issue too. Northern Residents (as shown in picture) have a much more stable population of over 300 killer whales. There's less traffic and more food for them in the Johnstone Strait. They have different dialects for different pods which helps them avoid inbreeding. .
Here's to SRKW 75. Stay healthy!

© 🎬 @sidocean The Southern Resident Killer Whales have a new baby! Stay healthy! . . . . #vancouverisland #vanisle #canada #britishcolumbia #pnw #westcoast #srkw #nrkw #explorebc #explorecanada #salishseaorcas #beautifulbc #travelbc #nofishnoblackfish #canadaswonderland #wearetheorca #ohcanada #wildlife #orcacamp #blackfish #savethewhales #orca #turningthetide #wanderlust #vanislelife #nofishnoblackfish #vitaminsea #thegreatoutdoors

For many years, China and its citizens have been paying a heavy environmental price for their years of substantial economic growth. Many major cities and sectors are battling to function amid the intense level of air pollution. Many regions are often engulfed in heavy smog lingering for days and posing a serious health threat. China’s pollution is thought to cause an average of 1.1 million premature deaths and cost the economy $38 billion annually.
•
Now, a recent study used a machine-learning algorithm to analyzed 210 million geo-tagged tweets from 144 cities across china. The research was published in the journal Nature Human Behavior, revealing that high levels of air pollution in urban environments could be a leading contributor to low levels of happiness.

Happy #WorldWhaleDay! I have a super deep love for whales. I have been writing, meditating, and dreaming about them for years. It was my recurring dream of a big blue whale under the Arctic sea ice that led me to the North Pole in 2010, then to found Parvati.org and establish MAPS, the Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary. MAPS is urgently needed for the sake of all life, including the magnificent whales in the Arctic Ocean. Learn how you can help at Parvati.org (link in bio). 🐋🌎💙🙏 #parvatiorg #whales #marinelife #oceans #arctic #peace #sanctuary #MPA #northpole #loveourplanet #activism #causes #bethechange #planet #ourworld #nature #turningthetide #humanity

#repost with @gillianwinckler - a cold couple of hours picking up a shocking amount of plastic. Most common - clips for bread bags and the insides of bottle tops. We can all use less plastic with a bit of thought.
