When I was a child I used to always read this picture book called ‘A Peacock on the Roof’ by Paul Adshead. I don’t even remember what it was about any more but every time that I see a peacock perched somewhere, it brings back a lot of memories.

Happy Valentine’s Day from me and my favourite animal: my dog! I’m often asked if I have a favourite species and I really don’t, I love most. So my new response is going to be that my favourite animal is singular and not an entire species, reserved for this little guy with whom I’ve got a very special relationship. 💖
.
There’s also a new blog post up on Fight for Wildlife today! You can click on the link in my bio or visit fightforwildlife.com and read the very special, if not disturbing, post that I wrote for all of you. It features the weirdest of the weird in the realms of love within the animal kingdom. 😉

Who doesn’t love a good snooze?
.
Vervet monkeys are incredible: they have distinct call types depending on the type of predator: leopards, snakes and eagles. The first thing they will do is look in the direction of the caller to determine where the predator is coming from. Then depending on which has been spotted, each call will elicit a corresponding behavioural response from conspecifics. For example, if a leopard has been spotted, they will climb up trees and sit on branches furthest away from the trunk.
.
Also, they have blue balls!

The dusky pademelon (also known as the dusky wallaby) is a marsupial that can be found in Papua New Guinea and the Aru and Kai islands of Indonesia.
.
When most people think of marsupials, they think of Australia - land of the kangaroos and wallabies. It may be surprising for some to find that they can also be found in regions of Indonesia, but if you know the reason why, then it makes total sense! Are you guys familiar with the Wallace Line?
.
The Wallace Line runs through the archipelago of Indonesia and divides two ecozones. To the left of the faunal line are more Asiatic species, to the east species that are a mixture of Asian and Australian origin. Asia and Australia used to be joined and species could travel across the land. As the land split and a greater mass of water separated them, the Australian mammals on Indonesia evolved to differ from the ones in Australia due to isolated reproduction and a different set of evolutionary pressures. I love science. ✌️💁🏻‍♀️

This is a Javan green magpie, one of the most endangered species in the world. It is estimated that there could be as few as 50 individuals left in the wild! They are threatened by habitat loss and also the illegal songbird trade. I’m thinking of doing a blog post on the illegal cage-bird trade in Indonesia and was wondering if anyone would be interested in reading that?
.
Full disclosure: this is an individual that is in captivity. I know some people think that captivity is the most awful thing - and if it bothers you, please ask me about this species in particular before jumping the gun. The illegal songbird trade is something that I have studied and worked on for the past year. It really isn’t black and white that all zoos are horrendous and must be shut down and you might learn something new. I’m always happy to have a conversation. 🙂

This is one of my favourite images in my portfolio. Maybe it’s just me, but there is something so alive about this picture that it transcends a single still shot. Almost as though if I look at it for long enough, maybe his eyes will flash open and see me too.

The African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis), as its name suggests, is native to parts of Africa. However, they’ve been used extensively for medical research on other continents and then released into the wild once no longer needed. As a result, they have become an invasive species on four continents. Invasive species can have cascading adverse effects on wildlife and habitat to which they are not native because they upset ecosystems and food chains, or introduce disease to which native wildlife has not adapted to. This is why you should NEVER release pets into the wild thinking ‘it’s just a couple of snails’ or ‘one turtle’ etc. In many places this is actually illegal. 😊
.
Fortunately, this little buddy was found in its native habitat during our field season last year and we scooped him up for a quick study. They’re pretty cool and are characteristically recognisable by their flat pancake-like bodies.

Anyone who spends enough time walking around with me will be able to tell you that I am a massive fan of pigeons. I think they’re beautiful and there is so much variation in colour amongst the different species. Look at the green and purple glimmer on this feral pigeon!
.
Why am I telling you this? Two reasons: a) I am very fond of this picture I took and b) because there’s a new blog post up in my bio link where I try and make a case for these (unjustly) widely hated birds. 🥰

How do YOU feel about pigeons, my friends?

The lions of the Ngorongoro Crater make a very interesting study in population genetics. Due to the nature of the ‘crater’ being a caldera, there is very little gene flow in and out. Because of the genetic similarities between the lions, any disease outbreaks often kill off quite a lot of the population as there is little variation in genes and mutations for disease resistance.
.
The lion population recovers quite quickly and remains one of the densest areas for lion prides - most being the product of a lot of incest! This resulted in a reduction of reproductive performance. However, recent boosts in fertility suggest that new genes have entered the caldera due to successful takeovers from outside lions. 🤞

Regardless of size, all mammals have seven vertebrae in their neck. Giraffes have seven and humans have seven. However, what they don’t teach you in biology is that there are some exceptions to this rule: sloths and manatees (as close relations of the manatee, 50% of dugongs and some hyraxes also diverge from the seven vertebrae rule). Two-toed sloths (Choloepus) have 5-7 neck vertebrae while three-toed sloths (Bradypus) have 8 or 9. How weird!

Gelada baboons, sometimes known as bleeding heart baboons are not really baboons! They are the last living member of the genus Theropithecus, which used to consist of many ancient plant-grazing primates. Pictured above is a huddle of females taking a nap whilst their babies suckle. This came out more grainy than I would have liked but that’s what I get for not using my DSLR! 🖤

ARE YOU OVERWHELMED BY THE PALM OIL CRISIS? Check out the new link in my bio to read my blog post which talks about the overload of information and I’ll try to help you to make sense of it all.

Last year I had the privilege of venturing into Tanjung Puting National Park to see orangutans in the wild for the very first time. Despite being born and having lived on the neighbouring island of Java for the first eighteen years of my life, it is something I had never done. I am so glad that I waited. By the time I went, I was already studying animal behaviour and I was lucky enough to be shown around by one of Camp Leakey’s researchers.
.
.
.
I learnt about the world of these wonderful animals, saw them squabble over mates, unreciprocated attention, care for their children and so much more. I got the privilege of learning about behaviours that had never been seen in the wild until recently, behaviours that have yet to be published from long term studies. I fell in love with these jungle giants but was equally devastated at seeing first hand how much of their habitat has been cleared for palm oil plantations. Things need to change. Please, please read the link in my bio and let’s talk about what you can do at home to help.

It is estimated that the elephant population of Tarangire National Park is increasing by 6% each year and is about to reach carrying capacity. This is almost a miracle due to its plummet as a consequence of poaching several years ago. The elephants of Tarangire are an example of a large, long-lived mammal with complex social systems making a recovery from the damage done at the hands of man and our greed - giving hope for other species suffering the same fate. 🐘
