Infinity Mirror Light Bulb: illusion of depth from multiple refections. This glass bulb is partially coated inside and out with a thin metal layer. The metal layer is made thinner in a pattern of small circles to produce iridescent colors through thin-film interference effects. When lit from within by white LEDs, multiple reflections on the curved contour create the firework like spray of light and color. Event Horizon Spin Coin: a flat spinning top with a black hole theme will spin up to 10 minutes on a sufficiently smooth surface due to a ceramic ball contact point and a high moment of inertia from the dense metal in the form of a disk. Galileo Drop Tubes: in a partial vacuum (left tube), paper confetti and balls of lead shot fall together and hit the bottom at the same time- as Galileo predicted some 400 years ago! The tube on the right has air at standard pressure, the left tube is at a partial vacuum similar to that of a light bulb. Kaleidoscope Symmetry Physics: Two adjacent mirrors form the repeating image of a kaleidoscope, but the shape of the image is determined by the angle between the mirrors. This principle is demonstrated with three different symmetrical patterns using this beautiful set of precision teleidoscopes- angles of 36° (blue tube), 30° (green tube), and 22.5° (red tube), creating mandala stars with 5, 6, and 8 points. The angle for any symmetric star pattern of n points is just 180°/n. A teleidoscope is a kaleidoscope but with a lens on the end, such that the kaleidoscopic image is formed by whatever is put in front of it. Polaroid Glare Reduction: this retail display illustrates the amazing property of light waves and Polaroid sunglasses. In this Oakley display a white surface is aligned by design so that the light from the white surface is reflected off an image of a surfer such that the glare is so extreme the photo is obscured- however all the glare light can be almost entirely eliminated with a polarizing filter oriented correctly. Light waves that are reflected leave the surface with a high percentage of the waves polarized parallel to the surface- if one wears sunglasses that have vertically oriented polarizing filters any reflected light off horizontal surfaces is mostly blocked. Forks and Toothpick Balance: classic "bar trick" where the forks seem impossibly suspended from the edge of the glass but are actually in a state of stable equilibrium with the center of mass of the toothpick/forks structure exactly below where the toothpick touches the glass. The flame dies out as the glass blocks oxygen and insulates the remainder of the pick from sufficient heat to ignite further.
